Abstract

Suunnittelukohteeni on Porvoon kaupungin empire-kaupunginosassa sijaitseva kortteli, jolle tekeillä uusi asemakaavaa. Kaavan laadinnassa on ollut useita eri vaiheita, mutta tontin 4 lopullista asemakaavaa ei ole saatu hyväksyttyä. Tämä on johtunut lähinnä tontinomistajan, kaupungin ja museoviraston erilaisista näkemyksistä siitä, mitkä rakennukset tulisi säilyttää ja kuinka paljon uutta rakennusoikeutta tonteille voidaan sijoittaa. Tonttien menneisyyttä käsittelevässä osuudessa olen selvittänyt alueen ympäristön rakentumista sekä tonttien vanhojen rakennusten historiaa. Suurin mielenkiinto on kohdistunut Metodistiseurakunnan kirkkorakennukseen, joka on alunperin rakennettu Raittiusseuran taloksi vuonna 1891. Korttelin vanhojen puurakennusten suojelussa ei ole kyse ainoastaan näiden yksittäisten rakennusten säilymisestä, vaan myös koko empirekaupunginosan vähitellen tapahtuneen hajoamisprosessin pysäyttämisestä. Suunnitelmassa olen esittänyt Metodistikirkon ja Etolan talon säilyttämistä. Metodistikirkko on hyvin säilynyt rakennus myös sisätilojen osalta. Sen sijaan Etolan talon suojelu on selvästi ongelmallisempi kysymys. Alkuperäisestä asuinrakennuksesta ei ole jäljellä juuri muuta kuin ulkoseinät ja vesikattorakenne. Rakennuksen pääkerroksen kaikki sisäseinät on purettu, jopa kantava rakennejärjestelmä on muutettu. Rakennuksen merkitys onkin kaupunkikuvallisissa arvoissa. Rakennus muodostaa yhdessä Metodistikirkon sekä naapurikorttelin vanhan kansakoulun kanssa yhtenäisen julkisivun Mannerheiminkadulle. Nämä rakennukset ovat ensimmäiset näkyviin tulevat 1800-luvun yksikerroksiset puurakennukset saavuttaessa kaupunkiin idästä päin. Olen esittänyt uudisrakennusta vanhan purettavan Puristustuote Oyn kiinteistön tilalle Linnankoskenkadun varteen. Rakennus toimisi välittävänä kappaleena Etolan talon ja tontin 5 liikerakennuksen välillä. Mannerheiminkadun varteen, Etolantalon ja Metodistikirkon välille olen suunnitellut puuverhoiltua uudisrakennusta, joka sopii mahdollisimman hyvin näiden kahden vanhan rakennuksen väliin. Tavoitteena oli kuitenkin, että rakennus kuvaisi selvästi tämän päivän arkkitehtuuria. Tonttien etelälaidalle olen sijoittanut suuremman rakennusmassan, joka rajaa tonttien sisään suojaton puolijulkisen tilan. Uudisrakennukset ovat asuin-liikerakennuksia, joissa liiketilat sijoittuvat katutasoon ja asunnot ylempiin kerroksiin. My scheme object is a city block in the empire style district of the city of Porvoo where the city plan is being revised. The planning process has undergone several different phases but without resulting in a final plan. Main reason behind this has been the differing visions of the National Board of Antiquities, the City of Porvoo and the owners of the building lots as to which buildings should be preserved and how much new permitted building volume can be placed in the lots. In the history part of my thesis I have examined how the district has been built as a whole as well as the history of the old buildings in the block. Most of the interest has been directed to the building of Methodist church, which was originally built for the Temperance Association in year 1891. The preservation of the block’s old wooden buildings is not only about the preservation of individual buildings, it is also an attempt to stop the slow disintegration of the empire style district. In the plan I have proposed that the Methodist church and the building of Etola should be preserved. The Methodist church is a well preserved building both outside and inside. The preservation of the building of Etola is, however, more complicated. From the original residence only exterior walls and roof structure are left. All the interior walls of the main floor have been dismantled and even the supporting structure has been changed. The importance of the building lies in its validity to the cityscape. The building forms an entity with the Methodist church and the old school from the neighbouring block. These buildings are the first one-storied 19th century wooden buildings you see when coming to the city from the east along the street Mannerheiminkatu. I have proposed a new building to replace the soon to be dismantled Puristustuote Oy’s real estate on the street Linnankoskenkatu. The new building would be a link between the Etola house and the commercial building on lot 5. On street Mannerheiminkatu, between the Methodist church and the Etola house, I have proposed a wood clad new construction which would fit well between the two old buildings while clearly representing modern architecture. On the south side of the block I have placed a bigger structure, confining a half-public space/ space-series inside the lots. The new constructions are combined residential and commercial locations in which businesses are situated on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors. I have sketched the apartments as small communal one-room apartments, modern versions of old “oven rooms”.
