Tiivistelmä
This master’s thesis analyses COD reduction data from three multi-staged bioreactors with biomass circulation and a conventional bioreactor simulating a complete-mix active sludge process. All reactors were fed with same synthetic wastewater with different levels of organic loading rates (OLR). COD and MLVSS values from the synthetic influent, individual process compartments and treated water were measured to determine the COD reductions, OLRs and F/M-ratios of the reactors and process compartments.
The multi-staged bioreactors were divided into three or four aerated process compartments separated by clarifiers. Biomass was circulated periodically between the compartments to introduce the biomass to different substrate concentrations, i.e. to expose the bacteria to feast-famine-cycle. The data from multi-staged bioreactors was compared to data from the single-stage reference bioreactor.
The multi-staged bioreactors had higher average COD-reductions than the singlestaged bioreactor, even though the multi-staged bioreactors were exposed to multiple times higher OLRs and F/M-ratios. Also, when compared to the values of aerobic waste water treatment processes from the literature, the multi-staged reactors were operated typically with multiple times higher loadings.
The multi-staged system and counterflow biomass circulation were demonstrated to have enhancing effect on COD-reductions, especially with high OLRs (3 – 15 kgCOD/m3*d) and F/M-ratios (0,8 – 2,0 gCOD/gMLVSS*d). High COD-reductions (typically 90 – 95 %) with comparatively high organic loading are potentially due to favouring systematically bacterial populations with intracellular storage capabilities and non-genetic memory responses. The bulk of COD reduction (on average 83 %) in multi-staged reactors was observed to take place in the first process compartment. The large difference in OLR between the first and second compartments was observed to have positive effect on the intracellular storage ability, as the COD-reductions got higher when the COD of the synthetic influent (and OLR) was increased.
The results from this study indicate that the multi-staged process with counterflow biomass circulation can enhance the performance of biological processes, especially with high loading rates. Potential uses for this technology are new plants and augmenting existing processes by retrofitting.
Monivaiheisia reaktoreita verrattiin yksivaiheiseen referenssireaktoriin, jolla simuloitiin täyssekoitteista aktiivilieteprosessia.
