The Master’s Thesis was conducted by Pöyry Plc, and it was made for the Chemicals and Biorefining department. The purpose of this study has been to find out whether Aspen Capital Cost Estimator is suited for cost estimation in Chemicals Industry. Additionally, the purpose has been to seek the strengths and weaknesses of software-based cost estimation.
Sodium Chlorate was modelled by using ACCE, and the software calculated a cost estimation for the process plant. The cost estimation has been compared to set of values found from literature and to expert analysis carried out by Pöyry experts. Interviews have also been conducted in order to gather expert opinions of the usefulness of the software. In these interviews, experts of suitable disciplines have been involved. The information of these sources has supported the key findings of this study.
Aspen Capital Cost Estimator is a software-based cost estimation tool meant to calculate investment cost for process plants. Having defined the equipment, ACCE calculates the bulk materials to support the equipment. The main findings suggest the software can be used in feasibility studies of projects. To get better results, additional work needs to be carried out to get better results with the program.
