Tiivistelmä
Data management is a process for improving data quality and utilizing data to gain competitive advantage. Even though data management has had recognition since 90’s, there are still common issues existing such as lack of data strategy, bad data quality and missing data management processes. To overcome these issues, there are data management platforms created to provide functionality to adjust issues related to data quality and data governance. The purpose of data management platform is to create centralized platform for different data sources and enhance the data by different tasks like data classification or data analysis.
The goal of this thesis was to analyze the data management platform of case company. The analysis focused on data governance functionality of the platform. The research was concluded in two parts. The first part was the scientific literature review that created the foundation of the study. The second part was the empirical research concluded as a case study where case organizations data management platform was inspected. In literature review, there was a data governance framework created that consists of data governance domains and key data attributes. After that there were defined data governance tools for fulfilling the key data attribute requirements to create governed data. In the empirical part, those data governance tools were inspected from the perspective of the data management platform of the case organization.
The goal was to create a better view on the data governance functionality of the platform. The results show the current state of the platform readiness and demonstrates the data governance functionalities that still need to be paid attention to. This helps to adjust the platform development roadmap to create a data management platform that has full functionality to provide successful data governance.
