Tiivistelmä
The main goal with this thesis was to research the possibilities of virtual reality technology and how they could be implemented to the design work. Another goal was to search methods to exploit the existing 3D-models owned by the company in the future. Succeeding in these objectives is important when thinking the future of the company. Only by studying and experimenting new technologies can be detected, which technologies are well applicable for ship design. Thus, it is vital that is continued to focus on development and in gaining new services that can be utilized in the future.
The first part was carried out as a literature review, which includes a preview to the history of virtual reality and also a wide preview on the factors that make the virtual reality experience possible. During the research also the characters affecting to augmented and mixed reality was researched, although when beginning this thesis the possibilities of virtual reality were already seen the most beneficial solution for the company use. In addition in this section was also investigated various virtual, augmented and mixed reality hardware.
After the first part, the topic was researched with action research. At the beginning of the action research the focus was to consider possible applications within marine industry that could be utilized by using virtual reality technology. The next part of the action research was to study how the company’s existing 3D-models could bring added value for the past and also to the future design work. During the research three cases were executed, where was studied exploitation methods for virtual reality. The practical part also consists an interview research, which was made within the company. The main focus with the interview research was to interview the personnel from every department to gain as wide view as possible of the usability of virtual reality when thinking the operation of the whole company.
The results are very promising, although some usage methods have stayed only in consideration level. However, the experiments and interviews done during the research gave the knowledge that virtual reality can be considered to be an outstanding visualization method when comparing to any other software. Virtual reality have multiple using methods for developing the existing communication and in aiding the design process to a better way. As a result was also received the knowledge that a wider implementation of the technology requires some investment to the hardware and more development work in the future. The research questions of this thesis was also answered during the research work.
