Olotiloja oppimiselle – Käyttäjäkeskeisiä näkökulmia varhaiskasvatuksen sekä esi- ja alkuopetuksen oppimisympäristöistä

Abstract

In this thesis, I employ user-centered data to study the architectural characteristics and functions of physical learning environments for early childhood, preschool and primary education. I focus my perspective on current educational ideals, asking the users of such educational spaces to sketch the learning environments of their dreams. The aim of my study is to specify the architectural needs, functions, features and visions for todays’ physical learning environments. My thesis is organised into five sections. I begin with a background review and follow that with a description of the data collection. I then present an analysis of the collected data before presenting my proposals for the design of such spaces. I conclude the thesis with some final thoughts regarding the lessons learned and the limitations of my study. For the background review, I provide an overview of the basics of user-centered design for schools in general and kindergartens in particular. The overview is given in the context of curriculum requirements for early childhood, preschool, and primary education. I examine current educational changes as well, exploring five contemporary cases of kindergarten and school architecture. The data collection methods I used for the case studies included observation, interviews, online inquiries and workshops. I analyse the collected data by categorising data sets by theme based on criteria such as features, functions and space utilisation. This thesis also serves as an assignment for the Architecture Company LPV Ltd , who is specialized to kindergarten and school designing. I conducted my research at the kindergartens of Rantaperkiö, Kuusela, and Lepola and the school of Härmälä. I collected the data in Tampere in cooperation with the students, their parents, the school staff, and officials representing the City of Tampere.

Tässä diplomityössäni tutkin käyttäjäkeskeisen aineiston kautta varhaiskasvatuksen sekä esi- ja alkuopetuksen fyysisten oppimisympäristöjen arkkitehtonisia, tilallisia ja toiminnallisia ominaisuuksia. Keskityn tarkastelemaan unelmien ja ajankohtaisten opetusihanteiden mukaisia oppimisympäristöjä käyttäjien näkökulmista. Tutkimustehtävänä kartoitan, millaisia ominaisuuksia ja toiminnallisia tarpeita sekä toiveita nykyhetken päiväkotien sekä esi- ja alkuopetuksen fyysisiin oppimisympäristöihin kohdistuu. Diplomityöni koostuu aiheen taustoituksesta, käyttäjälähtöisen tutkimusaineiston keräämisestä ja sen analysoinnista sekä tilallisesta pohdinnasta ja johtopäätöksistä. Työni lähtökohtana tarkastelen käyttäjäkeskeisen suunnittelun näkökulmasta, päiväkoti- ja koulurakennusten suunnittelun perusteita, oppimisen murroksen taustaa ja varhaiskasvatuksen sekä esi- ja perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman tavoitteita. Lisäksi käyn läpi ajankohtaisia konsepteja ja esimerkkejä päiväkoti- ja kouluarkkitehtuurista. Diplomityöni tapaustutkimuksessa käytän tiedon hankinnan metodeina havainnointia, ryhmä- ja asiantuntijahaastatteluja, verkkokyselyä sekä työpajoja. Analysoin hankkimani aineiston teemoittelemalla sekä tilallisessa pohdintana esittelen tilakonseptin, jossa sovellan tutkimukseni tuloksia. Teen diplomityöni toimeksiantona Arkkitehtitoimisto Lehto Peltonen Valkama Oy:lle. Tutkimusaineistoni on kerätty yhteistyössä Tampereen Rantaperkiön, Kuuselan ja Lepolan päiväkotien sekä Härmälän koulun henkilökunnan, oppilaiden ja heidän vanhempiensa sekä Tampereen kaupungin toimihenkilöiden kanssa.
