Tiivistelmä
The case company has completed acquisition project, which drives them to re-define their global motor supply strategy regarding expected synergies related to manufacturing functions. Need for strategic decisions related to motor production requires gathering an overall understanding of the motor supplier A’s production performance and capabilities.
This case study had three main objectives. The first objective was to create a clear picture of the motor supplier A’s production’s current state. The second objective was to define and recommend key performance indicators, which enable appropriate performance monitoring of motor supplier A’s production. The third objective was to generate and collect needs and ideas for improvements in motor production and co-operation with the motor-supplier A. To achieve the targets of this thesis, the main research questions of this thesis were defined as “What is the current state of the motor supplier A’s production?” and “How to measure and monitor the motor supplier A’s production performance?”.
This thesis includes the literature review, the current state analysis, and the benchmarking project to answer research questions. The literature review created a basis for the rest of the research. The current state analysis included qualitative semi-structured interviews, value stream mappings for standard motor production, and quantitative production data-analysis. Quantitative production data-analysis was based on the data collected for value stream mappings. Recommended key performance indicators were defined based on the guidelines from the theoretical background, the current state of the motor supplier A’s production, and conducted benchmarking project. Benchmarking project included semi-structured internal and external interviews.
This research exposed multidimensional challenges related to the motor supplier A’s production. Challenges were caused by lack deeper of understanding of basic production principles, lack of development-orientated culture and resources, and inefficient utilization of the ERP-system. This thesis revealed also challenges in co-operation between the case company and the motor supplier A. Hence, it is highly recommended to improve the motor supplier A’s production by target-orientated development projects. Development projects require long-term continuous improvement towards common goals agreed between the case company and the motor supplier A. Clear development plan with a commitment from both sides’ is required to achieve common goals in future. If the case company wants to continue the co-operation with the motor supplier A, this thesis recommends the case company to give strong support on establishing production development organization to the motor supplier A.
