Cross-border e-commerce as a product of digitalization and globalization has create a new business environment. The consumer needs and behavior are affected and changed by this new business environment. In order to capture the business opportunities in this new environment, the company need to think how to design the cross-border e-commerce and build suitable business models to create values. Previous studies about the e-commerce strategy and e-commerce business models can be found, but not that many relating to the process to develop the business model for cross-border e-commerce business.
This thesis was conducted as a pre-research for the Case Company’s e-commerce project. Thesis’s goal was to identify the business opportunities in the cross-border e-commerce between Finland and Russia. The purpose of the research is to better understand the business environment and the customer needs, build the business model to create the value innovation. Empirical data was collected byquestionnaire, workshops and meeting.
The results indicate that the potential business opportunities exist in Finland-Russia cross-border e-commerce. To capture the business opportunities, the key is how to create the value innovation and transfer it to suitable business models. The process of developing business model for cross-border e-commerce needs to be consumer centered, and link with the strong knowledge, distinctive strategy objectives and internal capabilities. This thesis has created some alternative business models based on the gained information, and the Case Company can develop the business model further and adopt it for different companies.
