Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to find out if a USB HID mouse would be a potential do-it-yourself project for enthusiasts. The thesis also explains in deeper detail how the modern optical sensors work, what features are available to the user and how the sensors are used. It also includes a comparison between some of the currently available sensors and a section on additional components, which provide more functionality to the mouse.
Furthermore, a printed circuit board for a USB HID mouse was designed and assembled in order to put the performed research to the test. The software for the microcontroller unit was developed to implement the routines required for this use.
The project was tested thoroughly after the implementation and it was verified to perform as intended. While the project follows the predefined performance goals, it was concluded that the project could be improved.
