Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis was to select lightweight- and ballistic protection materials to a mobile system platform which is brand new military product for Senop Oy. Lightweight, mobility and protection are the key words of the product.
Studied lightweight materials were composites, lightweight metallic materials and sandwich structures. Study included information from many material and military sources in addition to information obtained directly from suitable material supplier. At the beginning an analysis of needed material properties were carried out and later suitability of various materials was studied regarding the aforementioned needs. Considerable effort was also the weight of materials and applicability to function as a structure.
After the first step of selecting suitable materials, advantages and disadvantages for every material was listed related to the mobile system platform. Based on these listings suitable structure material and ballistic protection material have been found. The most applicable structural material is aluminum sandwich element whereas composite is the most useful as a ballistic protection- and spall liner material.
