Tiivistelmä
The purpose of the thesis was to observe Bellmer Vaahto Paper Machinery Oy’s project management during a complex delivery project. In the theoretical part, a literature review was performed to explore characteristics of complex projects and essential subject areas relative to this thesis. There is very few scientific research available about pre-assemblies so in this thesis, earlier empirical studies related to different projects were analyzed and it was assessed, how these findings can be seen at a pre-assembly. The main attention was paid to the pre-assembly of the wire section which took place at the company’s workshop. It was studied in the empirical part of the thesis. During the pre-assembly, there was created an S-curve by which it was purpose to monitor progress of the installation at the customer.
Delivery projects in paper machinery industry are complex and their delivery times are short in proportion to size of products and extent of projects. Due to a short delivery time, lots of concurrent engineering is done during a project and also great purchases must be done before an entire product has been completely designed. In machinery modernization projects, an end-customer may also define some initial data required for the engineering over very late stages of a project, whereupon the success of the flow of information between organizations and within organizations is extremely important. The results indicate that many mistakes made during the project reveal just at the pre-assembly. Earlier, there had not been investigated amount or origin of defects detected at a pre-assembly in the company. In the empirical part of the thesis, it was intended to record the defects detected at the wire section and to investigate where the defects originate from. The perceptions of the different parties were taken into account by the semi-constructed interviews. In the thesis, also time spent for repairing the defects and the costs resulted from them were found out.
It was discovered by analyzing the defects and research material that the defect in the wire section originate mainly from design errors and revision changes made after the purchases. The employees in the company were aware of multiple revisions but their effects were not evaluated before the pre-assembly. The thesis indicates that in similar projects, the company should pay attention to the design, but also in particular, the adequacy of resources and the success of the purchases. Based on the results, a pre-assembly of a wire section can be considered necessary so that an installation can be performed at an installation site within the required period. Based on the data collected during the project and especially the S-curve updated at the installation site, the company is able to anticipate and to evaluate even better than before the progress of the installation for future projects.
