Haasteista huolimatta yhteensovittamisessa onnistuttiin, joskin toisinaan vaihtelevalla menestyksellä.
In this study were sorted out the solutions made by shift working nurses to reconciliation of work and family life. Furthermore it was reviewed in the study if there were family-friendly practices applied at their workplace. The material of the study was formed by the interviews of the nurses. The interviews were carried out by the principles of the theme interview. The material was analysed by theory-driven analysis of the content and was structured with theme groups. Material processing was continued with forming an analysis scheme. Appropriate expressions for the analysis scheme were looked for in the material. Those expressions formed four upper categories. Expressions were simplified, and on the basis of those were formed six elements, which are Everyday family life on work`s conditions, Time management and priorization, Family as a resource, The significance of spouse`s participation, The importance of grandparents in childcare and Family-friendly practices at work. Additionally there were seven nurse profiles formed.
The results showed that each nurse had a unique family situation and families were in slightly different phase. Shift work, children's daycare, school and hobbies all dictated the life of the families. Division of labor in housework and child care between spouses was significant in keeping up with the job and being successful in coordinating work and family. The nurses with equal division of duties at home did not find it too difficult to combine these two sectors. Several families applied a sex-oriented division of family duties, which meant that women were responsible for household chores and children for the most part. The family-friendly practices at workplace received mostly positive praise and different sorts of arrangements of working hours were adapted. The work community understood different situations in life. The success of combining work and family was affected by help given by the close community. Especially the help in child care given by grandparents was considered to be priceless.
Family-centered thinking came across from the discourse and actions of the nurses. Family s interests guided the efforts to combine work and family. The nurses were committed to their families and they considered family as an important resource. Reconciliation of work and family was challenging and stressing. Despite the challenges they succeeded in the combining, although the results varied from time to time.
