Tiivistelmä
Tutkimuksen aiheena on sosiaalityöntekijän julkisuuskuva mediassa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisia tulkintoja rakennetaan sosiaalityöntekijöiden julkisuuskuvasta mediassa. Tarkemmin tutkimuksen aineistona on sanomalehtimedia ja Helsingin Sanomien 2010 vuoden tekstit. Teoreettisena viitekehyksenä tutkimuksessa on diskurssianalyysi. Korostan tutkimuksessa aineistolähtöisyyttä eli teoreettisilta lähtökohdilta mahdollisimman vapaata tekstin tulkintaa, siinä määrin missä täysin vapaa tulkinta on mahdollista, sillä tutkija on itsekin kulttuurinsa jäsen, joka omaa kokemuksia.
Vallankäyttäjän tulkintarepertuaarissa sosiaalityöntekijästä rakentuu kuva, jossa hänellä on valtaa päättää palvelunkäyttäjän elämään liittyvistä asioista jopa palvelunkäyttäjää itseään kuulematta.
Media Image of a Social Worker – Discourse Analysis from the Helsingin Sanomat from the Year 2010 Articles
The subject of this research is the media image of a social worker. The aim is to examine what
kinds of interpretations are built from social workers in the media. Newspaper is used as a research
material, more specifically newspaper texts from Helsingin Sanomat from the year 2010. Discourse
analysis is used in the research as a theoretical framework. The central theoretical idea of the
research is the assumption that social reality is constructed through language, both spoken and
written language. By using language people engage in building their social reality by giving
meanings to it. This means that texts written to the newspapers are constructing the social reality by
giving meanings to it. Discourse analysis is a way to get inside this social reality. I emphasise in the
research an approach that is grounded in the data. This means the theoretically free examination of
the texts. This is not totally possible because the researcher is a part of the culture and the social
reality which is being examined. The researcher’s own experiences influence the way she constructs
her own interpretations.
Based on the analysis of the data, eight interpretative repertoires can be found. These interpretative
repertoires construct the media image of a social worker. Interpretations of social workers are that
they are not doing anything and they use authority on their clients. A social worker is also burdened
with work and responsible at it. Then there is the interpretation that the social worker does too much
and interferes. There are co-operative interpretative repertoire and the interpretation of the influence
gender might have on the social worker’s decision making. There is also the silent social workers
interpretative repertoire and in the last and certainly the least there is the interpretation of the social
worker’s help being beneficial. The strongest of the interpretative repertoires are not doing anything
and the use of authority. In the interpretation of a social worker not doing anything there is a
constructed image of a social worker from who you cannot get help even if you asked. In the
authority interpretation there is seen an image of a social worker who has the power to decide the
life of a client even without listening to that client. Texts which constructed these kinds of
interpretations were usually the most dramatically presented. Dramatic news influence readers
minds the most because of the emotions they raise. In the research social workers doing nothing
interpretative repertoire is usually justified by the lack of recourses. The shortage of resources
burdens the social worker who tries to help the client with the recourses available to the social
worker. This constructs an opposite image to the image were the social worker is not doing
anything.
Social workers themselves seldom participated to building their media image. This made me
wonder was this the reason that social workers were portrayed in the newspaper texts more in a
negative than a positive light. This more negative media image points out why it is important that
social workers detach themselves from the spiral of silence and participate more in the public
discussion about social work and social workers. If social workers do not construct their media
image others certainly will and to their own ends.
