Tiivistelmä
Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tarkoituksena on tarkastella Etelä-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiirin alueella vuonna 2011 tyypin 1 diabetekseen sairastuneiden lasten perheitä ja mahdollisia perheiden elämää kuormittavia tekijöitä ennen lapsen sairastumista tyypin 1 diabetekseen. Olen työssäni sairaalan sosiaalityöntekijänä havainnut, että melko usein lasten perheiden elämässä on ollut kuormittavuutta jo ennen lapsen sairastumista tyypin 1 diabetekseen. Tätä havaintoa tukevat myös kansainväliset tutkimukset aiheesta. Näiden pohjalta päätin lähteä tarkastelemaan sitä, voisiko elämää kuormittavilla tekijöillä olla vaikutusta tyypin 1 diabeteksen puhkeamiseen. Tämän tutkimuksen tutkimuskysymykset ovat: Millaisten perheiden lapset ovat sairastuneet tyypin 1 diabetekseen? Millaisia elämää kuormittavia tekijöitä perheillä on ollut ennen lapsen sairastumista tyypin 1 diabetekseen?
Tutkimuksen teoriaosuudessa on käsitelty kirjallisuuden ja aikaisempien tutkimusten kautta hyvinvointia ja elämää kuormittavia tekijöitä. Lisäksi on tarkasteltu lapsen sairastumista tyypin 1 diabetekseen sekä sairauden vaikutuksia perheeseen. Tämän lisäksi on keskitytty sosiaalityön roolin terveydenhuollossa.
Tutkielma on kvalitatiivinen. Tutkimuksen aineistona on Etelä-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiirin alueella kaikki vuonna 2011 tyypin 1 diabetekseen sairastuneet lapset ja heidän perheensä. Aineisto koostuu sosiaalityön asiakirjoista, joita on yhteensä 29 kappaletta.
Children developing diabetes and the strains on families
The objective of this Master’s Thesis is to examine the families of children who developed type 1 diabetes in 2011as well as the possible factors straining their families prior to the onset of diabetes. In my work as a hospital social worker I have found that rather often there have been straining fac-tors in children’s lives before they have developed type 1 diabetes. This perception was also sup-ported by international studies on the matter. Based on this I decided to examine whether the strain-ing factors could have an influence in the onset of type 1 diabetes. The research questions for this thesis are: What kinds of families do the children developing type 1 diabetes have? What kinds of life straining factors have these families had prior to the child developing type 1 diabetes?
Through literature and previous studies, the theory section of the study handles the factors putting strain on welfare and life. In addition, it examines the process of a child developing type 1 diabetes and the impacts of this on a family. Furthermore, the study focuses on the role of social work in health care; health social work.
The approach used in the study is qualitative. The data for the study are all the children that have developed type 1 diabetes in 2011as well as their families in the South Ostrobothnia Health Care District. The data comprises of a total of 29 social work documents. It has not been specifically col-lected for this purpose but it exists anyway as social work documents in the hospital database. In analysing the documents, I apply the means of thematic content analysis and quantification. I formed the following main themes of the contents of the documents: diabetes in the family, normal nuclear family, blended family/single parent, death of a family member, lack of support network, poor financial situation, other strain and mental health or alcohol/drug problem. In this case, ’other strain’ refers to illness, excessive work, bad terms between family members, house building project, crisis, too many hobbies and insufficient time to tend to marital relations.
According to the results of the study more than half of the families of the children who had devel-oped type 1 diabetes in 2011 had been under strain prior to the onset of the child’s type 1 diabetes. In rather a many cases there had even been more than one straining factor. The study also shows that most children developing type 1 diabetes come from normal nuclear families.
