Tiivistelmä
Tutkimus kuvaa eläytymismenetelmän avulla suomalaisten nuorten mielikuvia suomalaisen vanhuksen itsemurhan syistä. Eläytymismenetelmässä vastaajalle annetaan lyhyt, tutkittavaan aiheeseen perehdyttävä kehyskertomus, jota vastaaja kirjallisesti jatkaa. Pro gradu -tutkimuksessani kehyskertomukset ovat tarinan loppu: vanhat päähenkilöt, Pentti ja Tyyne, tekevät itsemurhan. Vastaajien tehtävänä on kirjoittaa tarinan alku: miten ja miksi itsemurhaan päädytään. Vastauksia kerättiin kaikkiaan 147 kappaletta kuudessa eri tamperelaisessa oppilaitoksessa.

The study reveals via a role-playing the ideas that Finnish youth has about suicides of the old people. In the role-playing study the respondent is given a short, into the scheme initiating framestory, which he/she literally continues. In my pro-gradu study the framestories are the ending of the story: the old main characters, Pentti and Tyyne, commit a suicide. The respondents were to write a storybeginning: how and why it ends to a suicide. There were 147 responds all together from seven schools in Tampere. The responds were divided by the cause in five classes and tabulated. The classes of causes were A) emptiness of life, B) illness, C) tragedy, D) whim and E) out. In the analysis the focus was in the numeral comparing of causes related to the gender and school. According the results both men and women thought that cause for an elderly person`s suicide was the feeling of needlessness, which was joined by loneliness and experience of useless life. The needlessness was explained with end of work, lack of spouse and family. Another reason was illness: Tyyne was escaping incurable disease and situation, where she is depended of others; Pentti committed a suicide also for sudden tragedies and whims - hardly ever because of an illness. The gender of the respondent did not effect much to the results. The study reveals the meaning of work, society and the close ones as a "keeping in life"-factors. Despite of the fictional nature of the stories produced by the respondents show their own ideas and interpretations of life, difficulties and reasons to live/die of the old people.
