Tiivistelmä
Dentofacial deformities can be corrected by the combination of orthodontic movement of the teeth and surgical repositioning of one or both jaws. The treatment should result in a functional bite and improve facial esthetics.
In patients that require surgery to both jaws the esthetic outcomes can be further improved by rotation of jaws, called the rotation of the maxillomandibular complex.
The study involved development of this new surgical treatment design, the development of a scientific method for predicting treatment results and an investigation of the skeletal stability of the facial bones following, conventional surgical treatment, clockwise rotation and counterclockwise rotation of the lower third of the face. The clinical outcomes were also critically assessed.
It was shown that the treatment design is sound, the results can be predicted and the post operative skeletal stability following rotation of the maxillomandibular complex compare well with the cases treated conventionally. The clinical outcomes were found to be excellent and also compared well with conventional treatment outcomes.
