The rationale behind the publication was the growing public concern over the ´crisis´ of comtemporary childhood, parenthood, and family-life. The publication sheds light on current trends within childhood, family and social problems research in the Nordic and Baltic countries. The texts originate from a seminar "What's new? Family, Childhood and Social Problems" organised by Perla (Childhood and Family Researc Unit) in November 2003 at the University of Tampere. The chapters included bring together children's and adults' experiences in varying living contexts and in different events of life, concerning families in different countries and in different phases of societal and cultural contexts.
