Social development offers an extented human security approach to global development to be considered alongside the more dominant frameworks of security politics and trade. Social development combines a multidisciplinary approach of development studies with the concepts of social science. This book contains perspectives as various as social security, gender, environmental concerns, trade policies and local development.
The volume includes critical insights to development in addition to focal questions such as: Can the modernization history of Finland be illustrating for today's emerging economies? Assuming a certain universality in development processes this book asks how education, social policy and economic policies could be utilized to improve social conditions in the South? How does the environment - or political ecology - affect social development? And can social development be measured and compared across countries?
The book is suitable for academic purposes. It is an introductory volume for decision-makers and activists, in addition to any citizen keen on global affairs.
