Tiivistelmä
Virtual reality and the metaverse have been advertised as public spaces by tech companies. The internet has been considered a public space in many approaches from different disciplines. A public space is by definition a place that is open to the public; that is, everyone, and is not dependant on relationships with companies or memberships. Public places are places to be in the public and for public activities. Public spaces as places for public and societal activities are as old as humankind. The key question is whether these private virtual worlds could be considered as semi-public or public places and have public functions. Public places that have importance for society have a public function as part of the public sphere and public life.
