Tiivistelmä
This bachelor’s thesis analyses the usage of English adapted and non-adapted loanwords in a Finnish podcast-conversation. The usage of English and its position in Finland have been increasing since the 1900s. Multilingualism and code-switching are researched topics within the field of linguistics but the usage of lexical borrowings has been somewhat overlooked as a topic of study in itself compared to code-switching.
The thesis’ theoretical background is in lexical borrowing, code-switching, and social media as well as in the position of English in Finland. The main source is Viki ja Köpi Show season eight, episode one: “Shake that ennustaja-ass”. This thesis has been conducted employing conversation analysis. The parts of the podcast-episode in which English loanwords are used have been transcribed. Adapted and non-adapted loanwords were analysed in separate subsections, and adapted loanwords were also analysed regarding the ways in which they had been adapted into Finnish from English.
According to the research results, there is some visible influence of social media in the usage on loanwords, although the results were not enough to draw generalized conclusions and the motives behind the usage of every loanword was not clear enough to draw a profound analysis.
