Tiivistelmä
Hämeenlinnan vanha kirjastotalo rakennettiin alun perin venäläiseksi sotilaskirkoksi kaupungin keskustaan vuonna 1900. Suomen itsenäistymisen jälkeisinä vuosina useista ortodoksikirkoista riisuttiin venäläisen arkkitehtuurin tunnusmerkkejä, ja Hämeenlinnan sotilaskirkko koki yhden kokonaisvaltaisimmista muutoksista. Ortodoksikirkko muutettiin vuonna 1923 arkkitehti Bertel Strömmerin suunnitelmien mukaiseksi, klassistiseksi kirjastorakennukseksi.
The old library building in Hämeenlinna was originally built as a Russian garrison church in the city centre in 1900. In the years following Finland’s independence, several Orthodox churches were stripped of their defining characteristics of Russian architecture, and the Hämeenlinna garrison church underwent one of the most comprehensive transformations. In 1923, the Orthodox church was converted into a classicist library building according to the designs of architect Bertel Strömmer. The building served as a library for 60 years, after which it has been used for various purposes. Now, reconsidering the building’s future use has once again become topical, while at the same time the city is facing the current challenge of finding new premises for the city museum.
This master’s thesis examines the potential of the old library building in Hämeenlinna for use as a museum as a solution to two current challenges facing the city. The first part of the study reviews the building’s historical phases and its various uses over time. In addition, the transformation of the church into a library building is examined in more detail, and a survey is conducted on the preservation of its structures and the subsequent alterations made. Finally, the work presents a plan for changing the building’s purpose to a museum. The aim of the design is a conservation design that identifies and saves the building’s culturally and historically valuable spaces and structures. The plan aims to highlight the building’s potential for public use and create versatile and interesting exhibition spaces suitable for museum use. The plan restores the spatial structure of the former Orthodox church hall to the first floor, which was partially lost during the 1920s modification work.
The conclusions of the design process state that the building presents challenges for museum use that are typical of historic buildings not originally designed for such a purpose. However, it is possible to accommodate the functions required by a museum and to create diverse and compelling exhibition spaces within the building. The architecture of the building and its prominent location would make it well suited for use as a city museum, and, given its significant history, the building itself could serve as one of the exhibition objects. As a museum or in other uses, the building would truly come into its own in a public, accessible context. With knowledgeable design that respects its history, it is possible to transform the building into an engaging and immersive destination, where the structures and spaces of different periods tell the story of its remarkable past.
