Koska suomalaisissa peruskouluissa annetun opetuksen tulee pohjautua Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteisiin, tutkimuksen tuloksia verrattiin siihen, mitä opetussuunnitelman perusteissa mainitaan pragmaattiseen sujuvuuteen liittyvien taitojen opettamisesta sekä opetuksen tavoitteista johdetuista oppimistavoitteista.
Tutkimusaineisto kerättiin Come with me!
Koska aiemman tutkimustiedon perusteella pragmaattisten taitojen oppiminen vaatii tiedon prosessointia, on epätodennäköistä, että oppilaat oppisivat ymmärtämään ilmausten kielikohtaisia pragmaattisia sääntöjä pelkän toistamisen lisäksi. This master’s thesis, conducted as a double thesis, discusses English as a foreign language textbooks designed for Finnish primary schools from the point of view of developing the learners’ pragmatic fluency. The notion of pragmatic fluency refers to the ability to produce pragmatically appropriate language that simultaneously flows in a natural and smooth manner. The aim of the study was to examine what kind of instruction is offered about the contextually-bound use of pragmatic markers, conversational strategies and routine formulae in expressive speech acts, as well as how the textbooks guide the learners to produce routine formulae through exercises. Since primary education in Finland should follow the guidelines set in the National Core Curriculum for Primary and Lower Secondary Education, the results of the study were then compared to the teaching and learning goals related to pragmatic fluency mentioned in the core curriculum.
The research data was gathered from textbooks and workbooks belonging to a textbook series Come with me! designed for students attending grades 3–6. The study was conducted using the qualitative content analysis method and a large part of the data was then quantified to provide an overview of the state of the content related to pragmatic fluency. In the analysis of the data, both inductive and deductive approaches were used.
According to the results of the study, majority of the instruction was offered as implicit instruction despite the fact that previous research has indicated that in most cases explicit instruction has proved to be more effective when teaching pragmatic skills. In addition, there was a notable amount of variation in the data between the three main groups and between the subgroups and categories within the main groups. This can partially be explained with the possible influence of the National Core Curriculum. However, some of the results were contrary to the goals set for teaching in the core curriculum.
In the light of the results of the study, it can be argued that the processing demand was low or moderate regarding the instruction and the production exercises related to the targeted pragmatic features. Based on previous research, information processing is required to learn language specific pragmatic rules that determine the situations in which certain expressions are appropriate. Due to the low processing demand of the content in the textbooks, it seems unlikely that the students would learn to use the expressions instructed and practiced in a pragmatically appropriate manner. For this reason, it seems that the textbooks do not support the development of the students’ pragmatic skills as well as they could. The results also suggest that despite attempting to implement the requirements of the National Core Curriculum, the textbooks appear to be lacking in some respects. Thus, it seems that the textbooks leave much of the responsibility of teaching pragmatic skills to the teachers, if the teachers wish to fulfill the goals set in the core curriculum for the subject.
