Opintojakso on ensimmäistä kertaa käynnissä lukuvuonna 2025–2026.
The decreasing level of mathematical competence has been a concern at several levels of education for years. The concern applies also to universities all around Finland and solutions are sought for example through development projects. The goal of this thesis as a part of national MaTech-project is to create first version of a MOOC-course that prepares students to university mathematics. MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course and according to the principals of a MOOC-course it must be unlimited in number of participants, the implementation must be open and fully online, and it must be a curriculum-specific course. The course has been created to DigiCampus which is a Moodle-based platform. During the summer of 2025, both written materials and automated STACK-exercises have been made for the course. The course is running for the first time in the academic year 2025-2026.
The thesis examines how students' experiences change during the course and how materials could be developed for future implementations of the course. The feedback was also collected from the teaching staff of the universities involved in the MaTech-project. The theoretical framework used in this thesis are the cognitive load theory of working memory and the benefits and challenges of online courses. With cognitive load theory, the goal is to make the learning platform as clear as possible and reduce the unnecessary load on working memory. In the context of the research the unnecessary load includes inconsistent use of concepts, conflicting guidelines and the use of divergent indications.
The research results showed that the course was generally satisfied, and the greatest areas of development were felt to be in the scope of both written material and online exercises. Both the teaching staff and the students wished that there had been more written material and that it would have included not only mathematical text but also introductory text on the subjects. The number of tasks required to get the credits from the course was mainly felt to be appropriate, but more additional tasks were desired for the learning platform, which could be utilized to practice more on a single subject. The statistical significance of responses to questionnaires in different subject areas was studied using the Durbin-Conover test and the Friedman test.
MOOC-students were particularly positive about the fact that they were free to schedule the completion of the course to suit themselves best. Negative emotions in the MOOC were aroused by information technology problems, such as resolving unclear issues electronically or the inactivity of automated exercises. The course will be developed based on the results of this research, among other things.
