Alaverstas ajan virrassa : Tampellan alaverstaan teollisuusperintö ja käyttötarkoituksen muutos museokeskus Vapriikiksi

Abstract

Tämä diplomityö käsittelee Tampella- yhtiön entisen alaverstaan, nykyisen museokeskus Vapriikin, teollista perintöä, siitä eri aikoina tehtyjä tulkintoja ja kiinteistöön tehdyn käyttötarkoituksen muutoksen vaikutuksia kiinteistön rakennusperinnöllisiin arvoihin. Työn alkuperäinen tutkimuskysymys käsitti ainoastaan käyttötarkoituksen muutoksen rakennusperinnöllisten vaikutusten arvioinnin, mutta laajeni myöhemmin kattamaan myös kiinteistön teollista ja kaavoitushistoriaa kattavat osuudet, kun kerätystä tutkimusaineistoista nousi näitä teemoja koskevia käyttötarkoituksen muutoksen lähtökohtien kannalta relevantteja lisähuomioita. Tämän seurauksena myös opinnäytteen tavoitteet laajenivat pelkän käyttötarkoituksen muutoksen rakennusperintövaikutusten arvioinnista alaverstaan kiinteistön teollisuusperinnön ja historian laajempaan tarkasteluun.

Työn tutkimusaineisto on kaksijakoinen. Työn historiaosuudet perustuvat aiemmin tutkittuun tietoon alaverstaan kiinteistön vaiheista ja arvoista, kun taas käyttötarkoituksen muutosta käsittelevä alaluku perustuu ensisijaisesti itse keräämääni haastatteluaineistoon. Kirjallista lähdeaineistoa on tutkittu työssä aineistopohjaisen teorian (grounded theory) tutkimusmenetelmällä. Haastattelut on toteutettu teemahaastatteluina ja niistä kerättyä aineistoa on tutkittu sisällönanalyysin keinoin.

Tulen opinnäytteessä siihen tulokseen, että alaverstaan teollinen perintö sitoutuu kansallisesti merkittävällä tavalla moneen kotimaisen lähihistorian kehityskulkuun. Se kytkeytyy osaksi kotimaista teollisuushistoriaa, teollisuusarkkitehtuurin historiaa, sekä kaavoitus- ja rakennussuojeluhistoriaa. Rakennuksen käyttötarkoituksen muutos toteutettiin näkemykseni mukaan tätä perintöä ja jatkumoa ymmärtävällä ja kunnioittavalla tavalla, ja sen lopputuloksena syntyi kotimaisen museohistorian tunnustettu merkkikohde. Käyttötarkoituksen muutos ja nykykäyttö museokeskus Vapriikkina liittävät rakennukseen keskeisenä esimerkkinä myös suomalaisten käyttötarkoituksen muutosten ja kulttuurielämän lähihistorian viitekehyksiin. Käyttötarkoituksen muutos on siis onnistuneesti tuonut rakennuksen Tampereen teollisesta ajasta jälkiteolliseen, jatkaen sen käyttöä ja historiallista jatkumoa arvokkaalla tavalla.

This thesis examines the industrial heritage of a former machine shop of Tampella company at the eastern shore of Tammerkoski rapid in Tampere Finland, that serves now as a museum center of Vapriikki. The thesis examines the interpretations made of the building’s heritage over the time of its’ history, and its’ alteration of use’s effect on the said heritage. The original research question for the thesis only concerned the examination of the building’s alteration’s effect to its’ built heritage. Over the course of the study the research material for the alteration of use started to offer key observations that demanded more background information. This led to expansion of the research question to also cover the machine workshop’s industrial history as well as its process of rezoning in 1990’s and the industrial heritage conversation at the time of the rezoning, which all factored into the reuse project and its’ design principles. This led to the subsequent expansion of the goals of research towards the building’s history and industrial heritage at large.

The thesis’ source materials can be roughly divided into two groups. The first being the materials for the thesis’ chapters concerning the building’s industrial and zoning history, which are based on other researchers’ previous research. The second grouping of source materials is collected by me and consists mostly of interviews I conducted with the team behind Vapriikki’s adaptive reuse project. The literary sources were examined based on the research method of grounded theory and the interviews were conducted using the semi-structured interview method and analyzed by content analysis method.

With this research I arrived at the conclusion that the Tampella’s former machine shop’s industrial heritage is tied in a nationally remarkable way to multiple developments in recent Finnish national history. It is tied to Finnish industrial history and industrial architecture’s history as well as to recent history of zoning and built heritage in Finland. The adaptive reuse of the machine shop to the museum center of Vapriikki also ties it to the history of remarkable adaptive reuse projects and the recent cultural history in Finland. It can be said that the adaptive reuse project shifted the building successfully from city of Tampere’s industrial history to its’ current postindustrial time, all the while expanding the building’s use and history towards the future.
