Farewelling the Noun Farewell: A corpus study on the use of the verb farewell in New Zealand English

Abstract

This thesis is a brief look into the use of the verb farewell in New Zealand English. Though the noun farewell is commonly used by all inner circle English speakers, the use of the verb form is far less common. This study’s aim was to find out how the verb is currently being used in New Zealand English, as well as if and how the usage had changed. Though the verb form has been discussed, relatively little research has been done regarding its use. The theoretical background of this thesis consists of relevant background on New Zealand and New Zealand English, Language Change, Word Formation Theory, relevant dictionary entries, previous research regarding the subject, as well as a brief look into corpus studies This study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to infer the current use of the verb as well as the possible changes it has gone through. This was done by categorizing corpus entries into the categories: death, employment, and general. The analyzed data consists of corpus entries that fall between the years 2020-2025 and the years 1995-1998. The data for the years 2020-2025 was acquired from the News on the Web corpus (NOW) and the data for the years 1995-1998 from the corpus of New Zealand Newspaper English. According to the findings the use of the verb form has shifted from employment and general centric to more death and general centric. The biggest shift happened between the employment and death categories, with the data from the death category having increased by 18.3% with the employment category having gone down by 15.9% in the more recent sample of entries. Though the study’s sample size is small, it does show a clear shift toward use that is more limiting in its contexts. Based on the results, further research regarding the use of both the noun and the verb form is needed, as the shift in the usage of the verb form might not pertain only to it. Additionally, as this study was based on newspaper corpora, a look into the effects of globalization on English newspaper language could be warranted.

Tämä tutkielma tutkii verbin farewell käyttöä Uuden-Seelannin englannissa. Vaikka sanan farewell substantiivia käytetään kaikissa englannin kielen ensimmäisen kehän maissa, sen verbimuodon käyttö on harvinaisempaa. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää, miten verbiä käytetään Uuden-Seelannin englannissa tällä hetkellä sekä miten sen käyttö on muuttunut. Tutkimuksessa hyödynnettiin sekä kvalitatiivisia että kvantitatiivisia menetelmiä verbin nykyisen käytön sekä mahdollisten käyttöä koskevien muutosten arvioimiseksi. Luokittelemalla korpusdata kategorioihin kuolema, työt sekä yleinen käyttö muutoksen analysointi oli mahdollista. Aineisto koostuu vuosien 2020–2025 sekä 1995–1998 korpusesiintymistä. Vuosien 2020–2025 aineisto kerättiin News on the Web -korpuksesta (NOW) ja vuosien 1995–1998 aineisto New Zealand Newspaper English -korpuksesta. Tulosten mukaan verbimuodon käytössä on tapahtunut 18.3% siirtymä kohti kuolemakeskeisiä aiheita, töitä koskeva kategoria on laskenut 15.9%, kun taas yleinen käyttö on pysynyt suhteellisen samana. Vaikka tutkielmassa käytetyn aineiston koko onkin pieni, selvä muutos verbin käytössä kohti enemmän rajoittavia kategorioita on nähtävissä. Tutkimuksen perusteella niin verbin kuin substantiivinkin käyttöä olisi hyvä tutkia lisää sillä muutos verbin käytössä ei välttämättä koske vain sitä. Koska tutkimus perustui uutislehtikorpuksiin, olisi hyvä tutkia, kuinka globalisaatio vaikuttaa englannin kielen käyttöön uutislehdissä.
