Tiivistelmä
The exhaust mixture of combustion engines is aerosol consisting of gaseous and particulate components. Exhaust emitted from the tailpipe is referred to as primary aerosol, whereas secondary aerosol is formed in the atmospheric reactions of exhaust. Both primary and secondary aerosol affect the human health negatively and the climate with high uncertainties. Especially, particulate matter with a diameter below 2.5 µm (PM2.5) is a serious health risk, being the second most critical health hazard globally. PM2.5 is estimated to be dominated by secondary aerosol particles.
The air pollutant emissions of motor vehicles have been regulated to mitigate the negative effects. However, the leading Euro regulations by the European Union are less advanced for two-wheel mopeds and motorcycles, as a particle number (PN) limit is not implemented in the current Euro 5 regulation. Consequently, the significance of two-wheeler emission may increase from the perspective of urban air pollution. Furthermore, especially in Asia, motored two-wheelers comprise notable fraction of the vehicle fleet.
Currently, the knowledge about unregulated pollutants such as PN, black carbon (BC) and secondary aerosol forming from exhaust is limited for modern four-stroke two-wheelers. To fill these knowledge gaps, the primary and secondary exhaust emissions of a 50 cc Euro 5 moped, a 300 cc Euro 4 motorcycle and a 1200 cc Euro 5 motorcycle were measured under laboratory conditions. The World-wide Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC) on a chassis dynamometer was driven for these vehicles with repetitions. For the first time, two-wheeler exhaust was introduced to an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) photochemically aging the exhaust to study the secondary aerosol formation during dynamic driving.
The analysed measurement results indicated that the current Euro emission limits were mainly met for the gaseous pollutants. The PM emissions of all two-wheelers were clearly below the regulatory limit. However, the results revealed that the PN limit for Euro 7 passenger cars can be exceeded by a Euro 5 motorcycle, contrary to an earlier study. For the first time, BC emission factors (EFs) were reported for Euro 4 and Euro 5 two-wheelers, ranging from 0.10 to 0.51 mg/km. Additionally, particle emission related to engine motoring, not reported before, were observed.
The estimated secondary aerosol formation potential, ranging from 1.7 to 40.3 mg/km, was higher than for modern passenger cars, and significant differences between the tested vehicles were observed. A trade-off between primary and secondary aerosol is suggested, as the motorcycle with the highest primary PM emission had the lowest secondary aerosol formation potential. For all vehicles, secondary aerosol mostly consisted of organics, and the main volatile organic compound (VOC) precursors were evaluated to be benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene (BTEX) together with trimethylbenzene and ethyltoluene.
Overall, the results of this thesis suggest that updates in the regulation of two-wheeler exhaust emissions are needed to control PN, BC and secondary aerosol. A PN limit should be considered and the capability of the regulation to control BC should be further evaluated. In future, methods and techniques to reduce secondary aerosol formation should be investigated and developed. Erityisesti halkaisijaltaan alle 2.5 µm kokoisten hiukkasten (PM2.5) on arvioitu olevan merkittävä, globaalisti toiseksi kriittisin, terveysriski. Sekundääriaerosolin arvioidaan muodostavan suurimman osan PM2.5:sta.
Moottoriajoneuvojen ilmapäästöjä on rajoitettu negatiivisten vaikutusten ehkäisemiseksi.
World-wide Motorcycle Test Cycle) mukaisesti.
