Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study is to examine how the characterization of Schmidt from the show New Girl is conveyed in the show’s Finnish subtitles. This study aims to understand why certain translation strategies are used and what their purpose is regarding characterization.
In the theory section, key concepts (audiovisual translation, multimodality, subtitling strategies, characterization) are introduced. These concepts provide further insight of the themes explored in this study. The main theory used in this study is the translation categories introduced by Díaz Cintas and Remael (2007), and these categories are briefly explained in this section.
A comparative, qualitative analysis of the original dialogue and the corresponding Finnish subtitled was conducted for this study. The data for this study consists of nine episodes from the first season of New Girl. Selected scenes are used as examples to illustrate the usage of the categories from Díaz Cintas and Remael (2007). The categories include loan, calque, explicitation, substitution, transposition, lexical recreation, compensation, addition and omission. The study does not feature examples from all categories.
The results of the study show that character preservation is occasionally altered, mainly due to the technical limits of subtitling; however, since the translators have applied appropriate translation strategies, Schmidt’s character is for the most part preserved. As New Girl is an American show, some cultural concepts caused difficulty in the Finnish translations.
