This study focuses on the Finnish translations of four songs in the DreamWorks Trolls movie, using the Pentathlon approach (Low 2005, 185) as theoretical framework.
The study’s aim is to examine how the Finnish dubbed translations of songs in DreamWorks Trolls are done. The study uses four songs from the movie, transcribed in both languages and then analyzed. This is done by using Peter Low’s Pentathlon method, which is a method of analyzing song translations focusing on five categories: singability, sense, naturalness, rhythm, and rhyme. This study also focuses on audiovisual matters like lip sync of the translated songs. This study explores differences between the Finnish translations and the original versions of the songs in each of these categories.
The study showcases that there are many differences between the Finnish translations and the original versions of the songs, especially in sense. The lyrics differ in meaning at times. There are many similarities as well, especially in singability and rhythm, which match the original’s.
