Tiivistelmä
Suomessa rakennusten lämmitys muodostaa suurimman osan kotitalouksien energiankulutuksesta.
In Finland, heating of buildings represents the largest portion of household energy consumption. If a building’s source of heat is electricity and the building is using a spot-price electricity contract, this makes the cost of heat energy change every 15 minutes. This study investigates how these changes in the price of electricity can be utilized to decrease the average cost of heating the house in question without causing a decrease in living comfort. This study is based on a three-story log-construction detached house, where the heat and hot water are produced by an electricity driven ground-source heat pump and the heating is distributed by hydronic in-floor heating.
For the study, a model predictive control (MPC) -based control system for the building’s heating system was developed. A dynamic physics-based heat transfer and storage model was constructed using Simulink. The model depicts the heat capacity of different elements of the building, heat transfer between them and the thermal inertia of the system. The linearization of the model was used as the basis for the MPC-controller, and a cost function was generated by selecting weights for the outside and inside temperatures, electricity price and use of heat. A simulation model was then built in Simulink that connects the model to the controller, gives them the required inputs and saves the outputs.
The MPC-controller received hourly outdoor temperature and electricity price for the next 24 hours as input, allowing predictive optimization of the heating control. Additionally, the controller received the current electricity price relative to the average price of the next 24 hours. The controlled variable of the controller was mass flow of water into the in-floor heating system, which was converted to a pulse width modulation -signal for the water circulation pumps of the in-floor heating.
The study showed that using a price optimizing MPC-controller saved approximately one quarter of the heating costs, even though the electricity consumption stayed almost the same and the indoor temperature remained within defined comfort limits. In conclusion, the savings were achieved by the controller’s predictive price optimization capability. The results demonstrate that model predictive control is an effective method for saving money utilizing changes in electricity spot-price. At least in houses with electricity-powered in-floor heating
