Environmental sustainability performance in corporations : A study of packaging and chemical companies

Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this study is to find out how well the selected case companies are performing from the environmental sustainability perspective in relation to the other companies within the same industry and against a different industry. Also, the environmental targets are reviewed to learn how ambitiously the companies are planning to reduce their negative impacts on the environment.
Five companies from the packaging industry and five companies from the chemical industry were selected for the study. All the companies had used GRI standards as a guideline in their sustainability reports. The available environmental metrics were gathered and combined into comparable graphs, and the environmental targets were listed. The targets were rated according to achievability and ambitiousness in relation to the reported indicators. Finally, the companies were ranked based on the consumed volumes and efficiencies reported.
Within the same industry the companies perform and report more similarly. The credibility of the targets reported does not indicate the companies would perform better than the companies with less targets. Tämän työn tarkoituksena on tutkia, kuinka hyvin valitut case-yritykset toimivat ympäristötehokkuuden näkökulmasta verrattuna saman ja yhden eri toimialan yrityksiin. Myös ympäristötavoitteet käydään läpi oppiaksemme, kuinka kunnianhimoisesti yritykset pyrkivät vähentämään negatiivisia ympäristövaikutuksiaan.
Viisi yritystä pakkausteollisuudesta ja viisi yritystä kemianteollisuudesta valittiin tutkimukseen. Kaikki yritykset noudattivat GRI-standardeja ympäristöraporteissaan. Julkaistut ympäristömittarit kerättiin ja yhdistettiin vertailukaavioihin, ja ympäristötavoitteet listattiin. Tavoitteet arvioitiin toteutumisen ja kunnianhimoisuuden kriteereillä julkaistuihin indikaattoreihin verraten. Viimeisenä yritykset pisteytettiin kulutettujen volyymien ja intensiteettien perusteella.
Analyysin mukaan saman toimialan yritykset suoriutuvat ja raportoivat lukujaan samankaltaisemmin kuin eri toimialojen välillä. Tavoitteiden uskottavuus ei takaa, että yritykset suoriutuisivat paremmin kuin yritykset, joilla on vähemmän raportoituja tavoitteita.
