Public Awareness and Adoption of Sustainable Construction Practices : Perceptions, Barriers and Practical Pathways Forward from Finland Residents

Abstract

Global demand for sustainable building techniques has increased due to growing environmental issues and the built environment's quick growth. Reducing adverse environmental effects, increasing energy efficiency, and fostering long-term social and economic advantages are the goals of sustainable construction. However, public awareness, acceptability, and behavioral readiness to adopt such methods are critical to its successful implementation. This study investigates community acceptance, views, and public awareness of sustainable building practices. The study evaluates knowledge about green building technology, sustainable materials, and environmental certification schemes using interview-based method research techniques. The results show that although attitudes toward sustainability are generally good, awareness is still unequal and adoption is sometimes hampered by things like high starting costs, a lack of technical information, and a lack of legislative incentives. In order to promote the broader use of sustainable construction practices, the study highlights the necessity of more robust educational initiatives, government assistance, and industry cooperation. Recommendations are offered to close the knowledge gap and encourage wider adoption, which will eventually improve quality of life and safeguard the environment.
