Tiivistelmä
Telescoping of the reel during winding, unwinding, transportation, or storage makes it difficult to handle the reel or, at worst, prevents its further processing. The purpose of this study is to investigate the evenness of adhesive layer, i.e. adhesive profile, of five different pattern gummed UV-hot melt laminate products in machine and transverse direction with adhesive coat weight measurements and its potential effect, especially on the telescoping of customer reels. The study also compares coat weight results between two different coating machines. In addition, the cause-and-effect relationships between process data and customer claims resulting from telescoping are studied by tracing the process data history. The purpose is to find whether there is a similar pattern gumming on the customer reels that could potentially cause telescoping or if the telescoped customer reels are slit from a specific position on the jumbo reel. The effect of jumbo reel length on telescoping is also considered.

Adhesive coat weight measurements were performed on adhesives A and B, which are used in the five different products included in this study. Coat weight in machine direction was measured using an infrared gauging system. Coat weight measurements in the transverse direction were carried out in the laboratory from the sample sheets taken from the top, middle and bottom of the jumbo reel by removing the adhesive between the face and backing liner. In addition, the adhesive temperature distribution in the transverse direction and the effect of the temperature change on the evenness of the adhesive profile were studied.

The studies showed that there is unevenness in the transverse adhesive profile, especially with the adhesive B. The coat weight is higher in the middle of the web than at the edges. Based on the customer claims of the five different products, product P1 has received the most claims about telescoping, but the product uses adhesive A, which has a clearly more even adhesive profile in both machine and transverse direction. Thus, no direct conclusion can be drawn from this that an uneven adhesive profile would cause the telescoping. The jumbo reels used in this study have been processed without any problems even though there can be seen deviation in the results. In claimed customer reels, telescoping has occurred most in the edge positions, which could be affected by the uneven adhesive profile at the edges of the web. The length of the jumbo reel and the slitting position on the jumbo reel length were found not to have an effect. There are also four different pattern gumming types present in the products, so a certain pattern gumming cannot be generalized as a root cause. With three different products, there is a few percent difference in the distribution of the adhesive in the transverse direction of the slit customer reel due to the adhesive and non-adhesive stripes on the left and right side of the reel. Already uneven distribution with an uneven adhesive profile can affect the stability of the reel.
