This paper presents a multifunctional model predictive control (MPC) method for grid-connected converters with LC filters. The control system is capable of operating in grid-forming and grid-following modes by adjusting the controlled variables in the MPC problem, enabling a seamless transition between the two modes. Moreover, explicit constraints within the MPC framework, along with a reference limiting mechanism, ensure the safe and reliable operation of the converter, even during faults. As demonstrated by the results, the proposed control system significantly improves system performance compared to a conventional cascade controller.
