Tiivistelmä
Virtual Reality (VR) theatre has emerged as a powerful medium for cultural storytelling, offering immersive experiences across geographical boundaries. However, linguistic and cognitive accessibility remain underexplored, particularly for non-native speakers and individuals with limited literacy. This study investigates how Easy Language (EL) principles, when integrated with Ability-Based Design (ABD), can improve accessibility in VR theatre. Through a case study of the Hairdressers production on the Second Theatre platform, this research combines survey data and semi-structured interviews from seven linguistically diverse participants. Thematic analysis reveals key challenges, including ambiguous interface labels, untranslated cultural references, and lack of subtitle customization. Participants emphasized the need for user-controlled subtitle complexity, dual-language options, and cultural annotations. The findings suggest that combining EL and ABD offers a viable framework for creating inclusive, user-centered VR theatre experiences without compromising artistic integrity.
