Tiivistelmä
The advancement in connected and smart device technologies has generated significant value from the vast amount of data produced. However, a large proportion of this data is not being utilized to create even more value due to different restrictions in the current IoT data governance. To address this problem, the EU Data Act was introduced with the main objectives of leveraging the value of IoT data, reducing barriers to data access, and fostering IoT innovation.
One of the newly introduced sets of provisions of the Data Act grants the users of the connected devices the ability to request access to the IoT data they generate during the use of such devices and associated services from the data holder. The data holders are also obligated to make the data accessible to the users upon request. This thesis aims to analyze the Data Act and its impact on the IoT data market, as well as create a development and implementation plan to prepare Kalmar SST Digital Solutions for the Data Act enforcement. Kalmar SST Digital Solutions (SST Digi) is an organization that focuses on data-driven software and services for intelligent cargo handling.
An in-depth analysis of the current IoT data ingestion system at SST Digi was conducted to develop an effective mechanism for data sharing. The findings from this analysis were considered during the design and implementation process in order to ensure the utilization of the existing system infrastructure and to select the most suitable options for the new mechanism. The decisions were made based on the performance, the cost, and the compatibility of the chosen service with the existing system.
