Maaksi pitää sinun jälleen tuleman : Konseptisuunnitelma kompostihautarakennuksesta

Abstract

Tässä diplomityössä tutkin kompostihautaamisen mahdollisuuksia tulevaisuuden Suomessa ja pohdin konsepti- ja arkkitehtisuunnittelun keinoin, miten kompostihautaaminen voitaisiin toteuttaa vaihtoehtoisena hautaustapana nykyisten Suomessa sallittujen hautaustoimien rinnalle. Työn ensimmäisessä käsittelyosassa perehdyn Suomen hautaamiskulttuurin esihistorialliseen aikaan tutkimalla kivikauden aikaisia kalmistoja ja niiden sijainnin valintaan vaikuttaneita tekijöitä, joihin lukeutuu muun muassa näyttävät maisemat sekä luonnonmuodostelmat. Selvitän lisäksi Suomen esihistorialliseen aikaan olennaisesti liittyneen muinaisuskon osa-alueen, vainajainuskon, vaikutteita hautauskäytäntöjemme muodostumiseen ja pohdin, miten paljon hautaamiseen liittyviä perinteitä on säilynyt nykyaikaan asti. Käsittelyosan loppuun kiteytän ajatuksiani siitä, minkälaisia hautausperinteitä olisi syytä säilyttää hautauskulttuurin murroksessa. Toisessa käsittelyosassa syvennyn diplomityöni pääaiheeseen eli kompostihautaamiseen ja pohdin löytämäni tutkimusaineiston avulla, miksi sen tuominen Suomeen osaksi nykyisiä hautaustoimia olisi perusteltua. Esittelen myös työtäni vahvasti inspiroineen kompostihautakapselin ja selvitän sen toimintaperiaatteita. Lisäksi tutkin Yle: n teettämien kyselyiden sekä sen julkaisemien artikkeleiden avointen keskustelualueiden kautta, minkälaisia mielipiteitä suomalaisilla on ollut kompostihautaamisen mahdollista käyttöönottamista kohtaan. Viimeisessä käsittelyosassa esittelen konseptitasoisen ideani siitä, minkälainen kompostihautaamiseen tarkoitettu rakennus voisi olla niin sijainniltaan, tiloiltaan kuin ulkomuodoltaankin, ja miten sen yhteyteen liitettävät toiminnot tulisi järjestää, jotta suunnitelma toimisi kokonaisuutena sujuvasti. Esitän suunnitelmassani myös kytköksiä esihistorialliseen hautausperinteeseemme ja pohdin, millä keinoilla rakennuksen luonteesta saisi mahdollisimman laajalle käyttäjäryhmälle sopivan. Etsin tässä diplomityössä ensisijaisesti vastausta kolmeen kysymykseen:

1. Minkälainen tarve nykyisten hautaustoimenpiteiden muutokselle on Suomessa?

2. Kuinka suunnitella ihmistä, luontoa ja suomalaista kulttuuriperintöä kunnioittava uskontoneutraali rakennus vainajan ruumiin kompostointia varten?

3. Millaiseen paikkaan kompostihautaamiseen tarkoitettu rakennus olisi hyvä sijoittaa saavutettavuuden ja ympäristön kannalta?

In this Master’s thesis I explore the potentials of compost burial in future-Finland and ponder through the methods of both concept and architectural design how compost burial could be implemented as an alternative to the existing burial customs allowed to be practiced in Finland. In the first chapter I familiarize myself with the prehistoric times of Finnish burial culture by researching what factors influenced the placements of the stone-age cemeteries, which for example included the beauty of the surrounding view and the presence of natural formations. I’m also researching what influence the prehistoric religions and folklore of Finland has had on the modern-time burials. Towards the end of this chapter I will conclude my thoughts on what aspects of Finnish burial traditions could be preserved during the ongoing changes in burial culture. In the second chapter I proceed to explore the main subject of this thesis: compost burial. I will use the results of my research to ponder the reasons why I believe allowing the practice of compost burial to be implemented as a part of the current burial methods would be justified. I will also introduce the compost burial capsule that heavily inspired this thesis and explore the functions behind it. I’m also reserching the questionnaires and comment sections of articles published by Yle news to figure out what sort of opinions the Finns have on compost burial being potentially introduced to the current system. In the final chapter I will present my concept idea of what a building designed for compost burial could be like location, interior and exterior vice, and how the functions attached to it should be arranged in a way that makes it all work together seamlessly. In my design I will also explore the types of connections that can be drawn from our pre-historic traditions and applied to the concept and ponder in which ways the whole nature of the building could be formed to fit the needs of as vast variety of user groups as possible. In this Master’s thesis I’m primarily searching answers for the three following questions:

1. What kind of need is there for a change in the modern burial methods in Finland?

2. How to design a building meant for compost burial that simultaneously respects people, nature and the Finnish cultural heritage all the while being a religion-neutral space?

3. In what type of place should a compost burial building be located in terms of accessibility and environment?
