Tiivistelmä
Eating disorders impact the whole family which is why families should be involved in the treatment. According to research, family-based treatment turns out to be as efficient as adolescent-focused therapy or other forms of family therapy. In familybased treatment, parents are considered as a resource. One of the most important part of family-based treatment is to ensure that the parents have enough knowledge and support to help their child to recover. Support is offered by a therapist through therapy sessions and family meals. The main functions of family meals are to allow the therapist to observe the typical interaction patterns around eating and to assist the parents to encourage their child during the meal. Peer support is also playing a key role in empowering parents.
