Tiivistelmä
The article deals with interpretations of rape in the field of social medicine in Finland after the
Second World War. The analysis is based on physician Sven Erkkilä’s article “Rape – the deed
and the doers”. The main method in use is historical contextualization of social medicine. The
research questions are the following: how was rape understood after the Second World War?
How was it explained? Erkkilä analyses environmental factors connected to rape, including attitudes and places, as well as hereditary factors, including “feeblemindedness” and “psychopathy”.
As a form of crime prevention, he suggests sex guidance at home and in schools. His solution
represents social planning, which was typical to the era. Erkkilä’s research reflects a wider change
in general attitudes toward sexual violence.
