The working organizations of academics, universities, become intriguing but also challenging subjects of study as they go through changes. In addition to positivist conceptions of academic distance and objectivity, a scholar is met by internal political tensions. These challenges, however, should not stop scholars from delving deeper into the change of their own organizations. Being aware of organizational tensions, actively reflecting on their own positions and utilizing research methodologies that allow participation and closeness, an academic can probe the organization in change. This article examines a research project into university reform through the framework of at-home ethnography. The potential of gaining broader understanding and expanding knowledge offers new insights not only to the research subject, but to the practice of research and the researchers themselves.
