Kohti neuromoninaisempaa kaupunkia: lähtökohtia yhdenvertaisemmalle ja neuroesteettömälle kaupunkisuunnittelulle

Abstract

Neurodiversity refers to the variability in people’s neurological or neurobiological characteristics, including, for instance, autism and ADHD. This paper examines how neurodiversity can be better considered in cities and in urban planning, which is a topic Finnish urban research has not previously covered. In this study, 13 representatives of Finnish disability organizations focusing on neurodiversity, brain health, and accessibility were interviewed. The study is based on qualitative content analysis, in which three different themes pertaining to neurodiversity and the city were recognized: 1) inclusion and diversity, 2) accessibility and design, and 3) participation and advocacy. The results indicate that a neurodiverse city is clear, calm, flexible, predictable, and tolerant. In conclusion, a more neurodiverse city promotes the inclusion of neurodivergent people through neuro-accessible urban planning while accepting people’s neurological difference and diversity.
