Tuotekehitysprojektien hallinta: Tuotekehitysprojektin erityispiirteet

Abstract

Diplomityö tutkii projektinhallintaa tuotekehityksessä. Tuotekehitykseen ja projektinhallintaan liittyvää tutkimusta julkaistaan runsaasti ja tekniikoita kehitetään jatkuvasti. Yritykset ja organisaatiot pyrkivät luomaan edellytykset toiminnalleen hyödyntämällä tuotekehitystä. Tuotekehitysprosessien avulla yritysten on mahdollista toimia mahdollisimman tehokkaasti käytössä olevilla resursseilla. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on muodostaa yleiskäsitys tuotekehitysprojektin hallinnasta sekä sen erityispiirteistä käyttämällä lähteinä aiempia tutkimuksia ja muuta alan kirjallisuutta. Lisäksi tavoitteena on selvittää, sopiiko jokin tietty projektinhallintamenetelmä tuotekehitysprojektille erityisen hyvin. Perinteiseen projektinhallintaan keskittyvää kirjallisuutta on runsaasti saatavilla, mutta tuotekehityksen erityispiirteitä käsittelevät teokset ovat hieman harvinaisempia. Tuotekehitysprojekti poikkeaa perinteisestä projektista siten, että lopputulosta ei voida välttämättä määrittää kovin tarkasti. Tällöin prosessin ja hallintamenetelmien tulee mahdollistaa tietty joustavuus ja toistettavuus prosessin sisällä. Yleisimmät menetelmät tuotekehitysprojektien hallinnassa ovat Stage-Gate menetelmän kaltaisia vaiheistettuja menetelmiä. Näihin on kuitenkin usein kannattavaa yhdistää ketteriä mene-telmiä, esimerkiksi Agile -menetelmä. Ketterät menetelmät mahdollistavat tehokkaammat prosessit ja paremmat edellytykset tuotekehitysprojektin onnistumiselle, sillä eri vaiheiden iterointi helpottuu ja tehostuu. Aihealue on todella laaja, mutta se rajattiin koskemaan yleisimpiä menetelmiä ja tarjoamaan yhteenvedon aihealueeseen tutustumiseen tuotekehityksen näkökulmasta. Suosituksena jatkotutkimukselle on selvittää parhaat käytännöt projektinhallintamenetelmien valitsemiseen ja niiden skaalaamiseen tietynlaisen yrityksen käyttöön.

This thesis examines project management in product development. A lot of research related to product development and project management is published constantly, and the techniques created are constantly being developed. Companies and organizations strive to create the condi-tions for their operations by utilizing product development. With the help of product development processes, companies attempt to operate as efficiently as possible with the resources available. The goal of the research is to form a general understanding of project management in product development using previous studies and other literature in the field as sources. In addition, the goal is to find out if certain project management methods are particularly suitable for a product development project. Literature focusing on traditional project management is widely available, but literature dealing with the special features of product development are not so widely known. A product development project differs from a traditional project in such a way that the end result cannot necessarily be determined precisely. In this case, the process and management methods must enable a certain flexibility and repeatability within the process. The most common methods for managing product development projects are phased methods like the Stage-Gate method. However, it is often beneficial to combine different methods with these, for example the Agile method. Agile method enables more efficient processes and better conditions for the success of a product development project, as the iteration of different phases becomes easily possible and more efficient. The subject area is really broad, but it was limited to the most common methods to provide a summary of the subject area from the perspective of product development. A recommendation for further research is to find out the best practices for choosing correct project management methods and scaling them for the use of a certain type of company.
