Tiivistelmä
There are more internet users than ever before. Social media's influence on society has risen since its inception. Discussions on social media have been proven to influence stock markets. Previously, data from X and other major social media platforms were primarily used. Most previous studies focused on stock markets other than the Finnish stock markets.
This study focused on providing a solution for studying Finnish stock markets through the lens of social media. The scope of this study was limited to Finnish stock markets and one specific forum, the Inderes forum. To address the research problem, a pragmatic approach was chosen, with design science research as the research methodology. In this work, an artefact was designed, implemented, and evaluated to address the problem. The tool of choice for artefact development was Jupyter Notebook with the Python programming language. The artefact was designed for end-users interested in studying Finnish stock markets using social media data combined with financial data. The goal for the artefact development was to create a solution that would be efficient, easy to use, and provide a dataset comprehensive enough for analytics. During the development of the artefact, several issues were encountered, primarily related to the execution time of the data collector and forum data preprocessor. The development of the artefact was conducted in three iterations. After each iteration, the artefact was evaluated by presenting it and discussing it.
This work provided a practical solution to a practical problem. In the end, an artefact was successfully developed and evaluated. This artefact is publicly available and can be used as a tool for analytics. However, the evaluation of the artefact showed that it is not suitable for advanced use cases like predictive analytics.
