Tiivistelmä
A leading sustainability transformation consultancy sought support in considering how they, in an effort to further engage in responsible business practices and by extension sup-port sustainable development, can reduce their own carbon footprint in their design services and software development process; essentially asking what frameworks are available to help sustainable-committed companies enhance their own sustainable design practices? This thesis uses the Levels of Maturity in Sustainable Design Model (LMSDM), in addition to interviews, team observation, and document analysis to produce a case study highlighting possible Intention-Action gaps at the selected case company.
The data sources included interviews with a sustainability team member, part of the team responsible for developing new sustainability focus services and internal capabilities, as well as an internal survey about employee engagement with sustainability at the case company, and cross document analysis in publicly available reports and content from the case company. Findings included identifying Action-Value gaps in the case company re-garding sustainable capacity development as well as identifying theoretical updates to the speculative LMSDM. Given the case company’s expertise areas, as well as the rapidly evolv-ing space of design and software development, the research suggests using a new sustainable design framework to investigate the organizational practices and structures that facilitate generating and sharing knowledge.
This study shares insights on the general usability of the framework, provides analysis and opportunities specific to the case company, considers implications of Knowledge Man-agement and Capacity Building practices in sustainable business transformation at large, and proposes recommendations for future development of the Levels of Maturity in Sus-tainable Design Model (LMSDM) based on the cumulative findings.
