Tiivistelmä
This study focuses on the preservation and adaptive transformation of a dated built environment, aiming to analyze its current spatial program and environmental significance while proposing a new adaptive program. Kalevan Lastentalo, a daycare center in Tampere built in 1953, serves as the focal point of investigation due to its present state of abandonment, underuse, and identity loss.
The initial phase of the thesis involves a theoretical exploration, assessing the implications of abandonment and deliberating between preservation and demolition options. It advocates for adaptive reuse as a preservation strategy.
Subsequently, the study delves into the site’s background and presents architectural design proposals demonstrating the potential of a community hub program to effectively repurpose the building. It posits that transforming Kalevan Lastentalo into a culturally vibrant destination could ensure its sustained upkeep and infuse vitality into the adjacent residential neighborhood.
By showcasing how the functions of a community hub can seamlessly integrate within the existing daycare infrastructure, the thesis underscores the suitability of the site for design interventions fostering community connectivity. Ultimately, the revitalization of Kalevan Lastentalo is envisaged to celebrate the neighborhood’s historical legacy while enriching its relationship with the surrounding urban fabric.
