In today’s modern world, where technology has evolved everything around us. Recent advancements in mobile device technology have heralded a transformative era, enabling groups of individuals to engage in a diverse array of collaborative activities across expansive shared spaces. It is pivotal to foster and enhance human connection and build applications that in turn promote community building, collaboration and cooperation. The advent of mobile devices with advanced camera technology has catalyzed this shift towards photography as a social phenomenon. As individuals armed with smartphones snap pictures of their everyday lives, a vibrant ecosystem of visual storytelling has emerged. This thesis explores the possibilities of community building for photographers. The emphasis is mainly on the location-based mobile photography application. The study investigates needs, motivations, and limitations of photographers for a community building application. With the help of background study, user interviews, design prototype and design evaluation interviews, the study tries to understand how photographers like using the application, what they think will help them in their craft and what things can be done to make it more beneficial for photographer community. It is not a platform for people to take pictures together but it is also about making friends with people who are passionate about same things so they can share their knowledge and learn from each other. The data gathered not only helped improve the application but also how we can utilize technology to bring people closer by bridging the gap, based on their interest and passions. Empirical studies have demonstrated that groupware, or collaborative software, should encourage community engagement, location-based sharing, content sharing, real time communication, greater inclusivity, learning opportunities and a seamless user-experience to streamline the process.
The study comprised of two stages with initial interviews (n=7) were requested to share their ideas of crucial elements needed for an interactive app. After the design process and finalization, other pool of sample (n=5) was requested to evaluate and provide feedback on the designed application. This study revealed the need for collaborative applications which foster social interactions for not only novice photographers but also professionals. This acts as a gateway for future developers to conceptualize applications that go beyond virtual bonding and focus on learning and growing skillsets together as a community. The results indicated that there is a need for social activity within experienced and new photographers alike. The participants expressed the need for adaptability and flexibility in coordinating activities, opportunity to preserve memories, ability for location-based photography collaboration, app that incorporates both components such as information exchange and communication tool, need for including education, communication, advise on equipment, networking, mentorship, user-friendliness, dedicated forums, secure photo sharing, access to photography specialists, and creative inspiration. The design of the application was built on the preliminary interviews and given a minimalist and intuitive interface for enhanced usability. The evaluation interviews after the design were completed were completed to examine and assess the usability of the application. Overall, the user experience and motive were greatly appreciated by the participants. Thus, the study highlights the importance for developing community-building technologies that fosters both socialization and collaborative learning. Such platforms can act as a foundation for enhancing social networks, learning, building professional and personal networks. Moving forward, developers and researchers should focus on creating technologies to promote meaningful connections within their local communities.
