Art performances, such as traditional performing arts, including classical music, opera, theatre play, and ballet, have been facing the challenge of low attendance rates, a concern that persists despite recent improvements post-COVID-19. This study explores audience engagement from a lifelong learning perspective. Through interviews with Finnish university students (N = 6) and thematic analysis, it examines their experiences and views on traditional performances, drawing upon the concepts of "learning through art" (Dewey, 1934; Gardner, 1990) and considering students' sensitivity to technology. The study identifies key factors influencing art participation, how art experiences facilitate learning and personal growth, the role of art communities in enhancing participation and personal development, and the revolutionary impact of digital platforms on art experiences and lifelong learning. Based on these findings, the researcher proposes strategies to increase student engagement, delineating a "positive feedback loop" model that encapsulates the multifaceted interplay between artistic participation and lifelong learning within the art community ecosystem, along with its key influencing components. This study contributes to understanding the factors and mechanisms influencing Finnish university students' engagement with traditional performing arts and the transformative potential of artistic experiences in supporting lifelong and personal development.
