In this thesis I examine the translation strategies of translating spells from English to Finnish in Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition and whether or not the translational consistency affects immersion. This is accomplished by following Ritva Leppihalme’s (2011) categorization of translation strategies. Furthermore, I explore how irrealia and realia are incorporated within the translations and whether or not these cultural or fantasy references affect the participants’ immersion. According to Tieteen Termipankki (2024) realia are concepts and objects tied to a specific culture, location, or time period, which affects the translation process. Irrealia is a hyponym of realia, in which said objects and concepts are based on fantastical or fictional cultures . Localization of both realia and irrealia is a vital aspect in translation, allowing the participants to immerse themselves more easily in the game’s fictional culture. Immersion is defined as a mental state of focus, involvement, and enjoyment.
The data for this thesis was acquired from Dungeons & Dragons: Player’s Handbook, a guide to playing Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition, and its translated version, Legendoja & Lohikäärmeitä: Pelaajan Kirja. I compiled the full list of 319 spells and their translations and divided them into smaller groups. In my analysis I reference earlier studies done on the translation of realia and irrealia, and immersion in tabletop roleplaying games. I further define the importance and effect of immersion in people.
The analysis of the data revealed that the calque translation strategy was the most common type, followed by superordination, explicitation and direct transferring. Ritva Leppihalme’s other strategies were used little to none at all. However, there were inconsistencies within the translations. I hypothesized that these could have been done for accessibility reasons, but the real purpose is unknown. These inconsistencies did not follow other rules set in the guidebook, which earlier studies and literature suggest may break the immersion and flow of the game. Overall, however, these translations are successful in providing an immersive experience for the participants in the game
