Tiivistelmä
The true crime genre has been a staple of the contemporary media landscape for a long time, with stories told through several different formats, such as books, documentaries, and television series. The history of the genre reaches far into the past. Since the 2010s, the popularity of the genre has seen a significant surge, largely due to the emergence of the true crime podcast as a new, entertaining, engaging format. Stories of real-life crime fascinate audiences for sensationalistic reasons, but the podcast format has ushered in more stories that combat societal norms around crime and criminality, question law enforcement, and subvert typical structures of true crime narratives by shining a light on injustices occurring in the system.
This thesis analyzes the second season of In the Dark (2018–2020), hosted by Madeleine Baran. In the Dark is a podcast that questions law enforcement and exposes wrongdoings in the criminal justice system, from the perspective of audience engagement. Audience engagement is specifically analyzed through how it creates empathy within its audience members towards Curtis Flowers, the subject of the podcast, an African American man wrongfully imprisoned for murder for 23 years. The thesis examines the common tools of audience engagement that the podcast uses on both auditory and narrative levels to emotionally engage the audience in the plight of Flowers. The tools examined in this thesis are voice, music, actuality sound, dramatic tension, and metanarrative.
The thesis especially focuses on how this emotional engagement is further cemented through the podcast’s commitment to the subtype of true crime known as the injustice narrative. Through presenting itself as an injustice narrative, In the Dark appeals to audiences as a reliable source of information on the racial bias and miscarriages of justice present in the prosecution of Flowers, perpetuated by a predominantly white criminal justice system. The podcast breaks away from typical conventions of true crime that usually focus on sensationalizing topics of crime and presenting law enforcement in a favorable light. In the Dark creates auditory and narrative division between the prosecution and the listeners by presenting information pertaining to the prosecution in a manner that is alienating and discomforting for the audiences. This thesis examines how these negative emotional reactions and associations with the prosecution and its arguments are used as an additional tool for creating emotional connection and intimacy with the side of the argument that supports Flowers.
True crime -lajityyppi on pitkään ollut keskeinen osa nykypäivän mediakenttää. Lajityypin tarinoita kerrotaan useiden formaattien kuten kirjojen, dokumenttielokuvien ja televisiosarjojen kautta. Lajityypillä on pitkä historia. 2010-luvulla true crime -lajityypin suosio on noussut huomattavasti true crime -podcastien suosion myötä. True crime -podcastit ovat luoneet lajityypille mahdollisuuden kertoa tarinoita uuden, viihdyttävän ja yleisöön vetoavan formaatin avulla. Tutkielma tarkastelee erityisesti sitä, miten In the Dark luo yleisössä empatiaa Curtis Flowersia, podcastin aiheena olevaa henkilöä, kohtaan. Curtis Flowers on afroamerikkalainen mies, joka tuomittiin väärin perustein murhasta. Flowers oli vangittuna 23 vuoden ajan. Tutkielma tutkii yleisiä yleisöön vetoamisen työkaluja, joita podcastissa esiintyy sekä auditiivisella että kerronnallisella tasolla, ja esittää, että yleisön tunteisiin vedotaan äänen, musiikin, aktuaalisuusäänen, dramaattisen jännitteen ja metakerronnan kautta.
