Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines conceptual metaphors within L. M. Montgomery’s novel “Anne of Green Gables”, focusing particularly on the protagonist Anne’s language. Utilizing conceptual metaphor theory and methodological tools like the Method for identifying metaphorically used words in discourse (MIP) and the five-step method, the study aims to analyze conceptual metaphors present in Anne's speech regarding her relationships. The goal of the analysis is to identify whether any particular patterns occur within these metaphors.
The literature review chapter provides an in-depth analysis of conceptual metaphor theory, highlighting its influence on everyday language and cognition. Drawing on the foundational work of Lakoff and Johnson (1980), the chapter explores various types of conceptual metaphors and their linguistic expressions. It discusses key concepts such as grounding and mapping, as well as critiques and developments within the theory. Additionally, the chapter contextualizes the theoretical framework within the study of fiction.
In the data collection phase, 13 expressions were selected from the novel for further analysis. The results indicate that Anne predominantly employs conceptual metaphors related to nature, emotions, and human consciousness in her expressions about relationships. Despite challenges in interpreting the inferences provided by the analysis, the study ultimately identifies some overarching patterns and thematical categories in the metaphors.
