Radikaalin innovaation menestystekijät : Case Meeting Analytics

Abstract

Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on kehittää työn tilanneen yrityksen radikaali innovaatiokyvykkyyttä. Yrityksellä on tähän tarkoitukseen luotu osasto tuotekehitysfunktion sisällä, mutta toimintamallit eivät ole vakiintuneita. Työssä seurataan erään idean etenemistä kohti tuotantoa, tehdään havaintoja, ja verrataan niitä kirjallisuuteen ja tutkimukseen. Diplomityön kirjallisuuskatsauksessa tutkittiin yleisellä tasolla mitä ovat innovaatiot, mitä eri tyyppejä on olemassa, ja erityisesti mikä on radikaali innovaatio. Lisäksi perehdyttiin erilaisiin kehitystapoihin viedä ideaa eteenpäin, kuten Lean Startup, Blue Ocean Strategy, Stage-Gate ja Design thinking (suom. muotoiluajattelu). Työssä päädyttiin seuraamaan Design thinking -prosessin mukaista kehitysmallia, sillä sen asiakaslähtöisyys ja todellisen ongelman ymmärtäminen nousivat monessa yhteydessä sopivimmaksi radikaalin innovaation kehitykseen. Tapaustutkimuksessa seurattiin idean ”Meeting Analytics” etenemistä aina ensimmäisestä ideasta siihen pisteeseen, kun päästiin tekemään käyttäjätestausta prototyypillä. Työn aikataulutavoitteiden vuoksi ei päästy näkemään viimeistä vaihetta, jossa olisi tehty päätös siitä jatketaanko idean kanssa tuotantoon vai luovutaanko siitä kannattamattomana. Työn tuloksissa nostetaan esiin seikkoja, jotka edistivät tai estivät innovaation etenemistä ja tuloksia myös verrataan kirjallisuuskatsauksen teoriatietoon, kuten innovaatiokyvykkyyden osatekijöihin ja Design thinking -kehitysmalliin. Viimeisenä diplomityössä tehdään johtopäätökset ja annetaan suositukset siitä, mitä asioita kannattaa muuttaa ja mitkä jo toimivat. Luodaan myös perustelut sille, miksi tämän työn ehdottamaa kehitysmallia kannattaa lähteä noudattamaan.

The goal of this thesis is to develop the radical innovation performance of the company in which the work was carried out. The company has created a department within the product development function for this purpose, but operating models are not well established. The thesis follows the development of an idea towards production, making observations and comparing them with literature and research. The literature review of the thesis examined at a general level what innovation is, what the different types are, and in detail what is radical innovation. There was also a look at different development methods to take the idea forward, such as Lean Startup, Blue Ocean Strategy, Stage-Gate and Design thinking. It was decided to follow a development model based on the Design thinking process, as its customer orientation and understanding of the real problem in many contexts proved to be the most appropriate for the development of radical innovation. The case study followed the progress of the "Meeting Analytics" idea from the first idea to the point of user testing with a prototype. Due to the time constraints of the work, it was not possible to see the final stage where a decision would have been made whether to proceed with the idea into production or abandon it as unviable. The results highlight the factors that helped or hindered innovation. The results are also compared with the theoretical knowledge from the literature review, such as the components of innovation capability and the Design thinking development model. Finally, the thesis draws conclusions and makes recommendations on what should be changed and what is already working. It also makes the arguments for why the development model proposed in this work is worth pursuing.
